In college philosophy classes one is taught to avoid them. Because they're generally used by lawyers to create untruth. But a flawed logical foundation can also lead to whimsy and beauty. I use it as a more elegant way to explain life's many curious phenomena. Here are three examples: 1. WHY HATERS GOTTA HATE? IF A. A "Success" is an endeavor or initiative in which the outcome is deemed ideally positive. AND B. A success can only effect a limited group of people in an ideally positive manner. AND C. A "hater" is a person who simply can not be happy in lieu of another person's success. AND D. Those who succeed are not always haters. THEREFORE E. At some point, haters gonna hate. 2. WHY DOES MY DAD CURSE AT THE TELEVISION? IF A. Television programming is meant to evoke an emotion AND B. Emotions originate primarily in the section of the brain called the amygdala AND C. The amygdala deals primarily with "fight or flight" i.e. fearful emotions. AND D. My dad's a fighter. AND E. There is no effective way to fight television programming through a screen. THEREFORE F. He curses at the television because, despite his amygdala, you can't beat up a piece of programming. 3. WHY ARE THE MAJORITY OF DRIVERS IN VIRGINIA TERRIBLE AT DRIVING? IF A. A motto is a phrase meant to formally describe the general motivation or intention of an organization. AND B. Virginians are part of the organization known as "Virginia." THEREFORE C. The state motto of Virginia expresses the intention of all native Virginians. In all things. ASSUMING (C) IF D. Translated from Latin, Virginia's state motto reads "Thus to Tyrants." AND E. Tyrants are to be violently destroyed by a native people in order to set an example. THEREFORE F.
